The Fallen Premiums – Rd 7, 2020

Written by Chillo on July 15 2020

It was a little difficult to write this article because as noted in the Rookie Review, you really should be cashing in rookies this week and getting set for future upgrades. But then again, you don’t get ahead in this game by doing the same thing as everyone else – so maybe it’s the perfect time to steal a march on your opposition and grab a keeper or two? What are your trade plans this week?

Here are the Fallen Premiums!

DEFENDERS

I was going to do a big fancy write-up for Jeremy MCGOVERN (WCE), $446 100 (-$29.2K), avg 88, BE 57 here, but he’s just too left-field even for me. Now watch him go at 110+ for the next six weeks in the Optus Hub!

Just quicklyLuke Ryan ($479 100, avg 89, BE 66) and Dan Houston ($452 700, avg 86, BE 38) were Fallen Premiums last week, and each man smashed out a very convincing ton. Houston may have found a way to make his new midfield/defender role work, while Ryan is a high risk/high reward option who heads back to his home patch this week where he averages 97 for his career.

Backing it up….
Sam Docherty, $571K, BE 196

Shannon Hurn, $456K, BE 159
Caleb Daniel, $548K, BE 132
Jack Crisp, $499K, BE 132

MIDFIELDERS

Tim KELLY (WCE), $500 000 (-$61.8K), avg 95, BE 75 – Geelong footballer campaigns for nearly two years to move to Perth. Finally granted wish. Spends the first month in Gold Coast hub. That’s Tim Kelly! But after compiling a typically classy 140 against the woeful Crows last week, Kelly finally heads home to restart his career as an Eagle at Optus Stadium. If you believe that off-field contentment translates to good footy, then Kelly is primed to churn out some big numbers in the next few weeks, yet here he is at just half a million bucks. Care to try your luck?

Blue and gold and all smiles.

Jack MACRAE (WBD), $578 900 (-$90K), avg 108, BE 110 – There are few better examples of how footy teams are a cohesive entity this season than the tale of Jack Macrae. One of the great ball magnets in the league, Macrae’s off-colour performances so far this year have coincided with the absence of regular wingman Lachie Hunter. Macrae was shifted out of the centre square to cover for Hunter, resulting in significantly poorer numbers in most of the statistical categories that matter. Last week Lachie returned to play and so did Jack – 26 possessions at 84% and a season-high 138 points. This week Macrae faces the Bombers, who he’s taken for 131 and 137 in his past two starts. Not only a trade target, but a captaincy option too!

Stephen CONIGLIO (GWS), $475 600 (-$73.9K), avg 94, BE 78 –A prominent footy “reporter” has made the call that Coniglio may be dropped this week. As in, captain of the club Stephen Coniglio, who had 22 possessions and four tackles and was one of his team’s best players last week.

Seriously.

Just quickly – Double downgrades are all well and good, but this week could be your last chance to get Elliot Yeo ($481 200, avg 87, BE 55) for less than $500K, or Patrick Dangerfield ($585 500, avg 108, BE 92) for under $600K. Worth it?

Limbo land….
Nat Fyfe, $639K, BE 218
Mitch Duncan, $555K, BE 194
Zach Merrett, $579K, BE 192
Andrew Gaff, $559K, BE 176
Lachie Neale, $748K, BE 173
Luke Parker, $558K, BE 171
Marcus Bontempelli, $571K, BE 162
Patrick Cripps, $552K, BE 150

RUCKS

Ben MCEVOY (HAW), $423 300 (-$80.3K), avg 82, BE 22 – As per usual in the ruck department, this is one for the true believers. Clarko has shifted Big Boy all around the field this season – back, forward, and bang in the middle. While the Hawks’ recent form has been indifferent at best, McEvoy has found something in the past fortnight as the jack of all trades in recording scores of 115 and 110. I won’t be doing it and maybe you shouldn’t either…but there is definite value here and money to be made, if you’re crazy/weird/desperate enough.

Big Boy transforms into ruck mode and faces his old nemesis Gawnius Prime once again.

Timberrr…..
Brodie Grundy, $679K, BE 139
Todd Goldstein, $685K, BE 134

FORWARDS

Kane LAMBERT (RIC), $458 400 (-$19.5K), avg 89, BE 1 – With Dusty spending more time in the forward 50, the ever unfashionable Lambert has spent more time in the middle of the ground and is making good there. 158 points a fortnight ago in his 100th career game was followed up by a neat 109 last week against the Swans, putting his break-even to a single, lonely point. Runs both ways as hard as anyone in the comp and won’t cop any extra attention from the opposition for doing it, and you can pick him in your forward line now before his price tag surges beyond $500K.

Jeremy CAMERON (GWS), $429 400 (-$74.5K), avg 78, BE 46 – A painfully slow start to the season for the athletic Giants spearhead, but Cameron has now posted scores of 92, 86 and 119 in his past three starts and is working into his year nicely. The usual cautions regarding key forwards go here, but if you don’t mind, have you seen what Tom Hawkins has been doing lately in the hoops? Get ’em while they’re cheap: that’s the motto for Supercoach full forwards.

Just quickly – Take out the concussion-affected 8 pointer in round 3, and Lachie Whitfield ($455 200, avg 84, BE 62) is averaging just shy of the ton this season. Still missing from almost half of all teams though, and something tells me a big score is just around the corner…

Forward thinking….
Chad Wingard, $484K, BE 173
Michael Walters, $572K, BE 135
Bailey Smith, $436K, BE 132 *blue light special next week*

    1. ….. but i should add i appreciate your efforts Chillo in still writing a fallen premium article even though you know most people are double downgrading this week. Can’t fault SCT for being thorough in its approach.

  1. Thanks Chillo.
There is food for thought there if people dont want to doubledown and take a chance instead with a cheapish premium.

  2. Thanks for the write-up mate – hadn’t thought of Lambert but is tempting (not as tempting as Whitfield or Bailey Smith though)… I’m pretty sure I could do a 1-up, 1-down but with the lower cash gen from (most) rookies this year, I think I need to double-down so I can get 3-4 premiums in over rounds 8-9.

  3. Damn i’d get Lambert and Cameron if i didn’t need more cash from a double downgrade. Forward line is horrible this year…
